Precision and Order…it comes in many formats and means different things to different people. Take this picture for instance. I was privileged to spend time last week with the Utah Association of REALTORS on the annual ‘Bike Ride’ to raise awareness and money for the REALTOR RPAC. On the morning that over 20 Bikes and 80 Bikers and Drivers left Salt Lake City an escort of SLC Police came to see us out of town safely. It was indeed a unique display of discipline and precision. They drove into the parking lot with precise movements…same speed, distance between bikes, riding with duplicate posture…then parked, one by one, in this amazing array of order. They came off their bikes together, placed their helmets on the bike and walked away in unison. Now that my friend was precision and order.
And then there is me! I’m about as far from precision and order as you can get. This is a picture of the space beside my bed.(Yes, that is an Easter Egg Pail) My husband calls it “the archeological dig”! I used to say I knew exactly what was there and had no intentions of worrying about it because it worked for me. Don’t tell him, but that isn’t true. I have no earthly idea what is there! Every trip I take to a REALTOR meeting or function the suitcase and purse get purged right here, and the pile grows. Every day when I come home in the evening the shoes come off, the work clothes are changed and..yes you know..it goes right here! There is absolutely no order or display of discipline to me when it comes to my AD (archeological dig) condition.
I once read that the table beside your bed is a reflection of the order in your life. When I read this I looked over at my table and almost started crying. At that moment I thought, “I gotta’ clean this up!”. I immediately starting digging through my AD to find my self-help book on “Getting Yourself Organized in a Day”..I knew it was there somewhere and knew I’d better get things in order. But as I searched through the stack I realized this wasn’t all bad. It may not have been in “SLC Police Order” but it WAS ME! I picked item after item up, remembering what I was doing, who I was with..laughing, crying***Remembering! And then I just laid it all back down. Yes I through the trash away! But I didn’t try to change my life by becoming something I wasn’t.
Any good coach, including myself :-), will tell you we need order and organization. It clears the ‘cloud’ and helps us get more accomplished. But trying to conform to what others say we should be just so it will look like you have it all together isn’t what makes you more productive. Who YOU are- What YOU want to do- What YOUR goals or visions are—- All done within the talents you already possess. I have found we succeed within ourselves…not someone elses self. That is why I continually say, “Know who you are and live within that!”
Have you ever made a major decision that you thought was a good one at the time only to very quickly see it wasn’t? We all have. This picture is of carpet in a very popular hotel. I’m thinking an extremely talented decorative team picked this pattern thinking it would be bright and energizing to the groups meeting daily. But reality? Too too Busy!! It distracts the business at hand. The bold yellow pattern pulls your eye constantly to the floor. And after five hours in a meeting all you see is the floor! Not very conducive to the business at hand.
How do you make the decision that is glued to thousands of square feet for twenty years? By sitting in the seat that others will occupy and look around. Step away from yourself, sit in the other seat and look at what will happen. No one knows the future but you can place all the components around you and view possibilities. Touch each one..explore..ask questions.. Find answers.. Then make that very educated decision. Will they always be the best one? Of course not. But more often than not it will be the better choice.
“To be successful does not mean you have to dominate others;
It means you have to dominate your own potential.”
I LOVE thatstatement! YOU are in control of this situation..this situation of YOU. Can you manage (a better word than control) your potential if you do not know what your potential is?
Six months before he was assassinated, Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke to a group of students at Barratt Junior High School in Philadelphia on October 26, 1967 in a talk titled “What is Your Life’s Blueprint.” In this talk he said:
“And when you discover what you will be in your life, set out to do it as if God Almighty called you at this particular moment in history to do it. Don’t just set out to do a good job. Set out to do such a good job that the living, the dead or the unborn couldn’t do it any better.
If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music, sweep streets like Leontyne Price sings before the Metropolitan Opera. Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say: Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well. If you can’t be a pine at the top of the hill, be a shrub in the valley. Be the best little shrub on the side of the hill.
Be a bush if you can’t be a tree. If you can’t be a highway, just be a trail. If you can’t be a sun, be a star. For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.”
Sit down with yourself, make a list of what you love, what you do easily, where your knowledge lies…where your dreams seem to always take you. Many times this IS your potential..it will be right in front of you.We tend to ignore this ‘potential thing’ because it appears too easy or as wish. But most often when you allow yourself to see, its like walking into a clear meadow, a place of shining sun, fresh air and empowerment. Then embrace your potential! Breathe in the middle of it! And do what Mr. King said..Be Your Best….
“The acquisition of knowledge doesn’t mean you’re growing.
Growing happens when what you know changes how you live.”
We continually put new information into our heads. Knowledge is money..we learn that young as business professionals. But what do you do with that knowledge? Recently I was in a class, soaking up new information. The instructor said something profound! “When you leave here, sit down with your notes..go over each one..extract what you can USE in your life TODAY! and…USE IT!” Now that may not sound profound to you, but it struck me right in the face. How many times had I read a new self-help book, listened to a Pod Cast, attended a seminar or workshop, taken pages of notes just to throw it in the backseat of my car (yes, it is very scary there!) and never looked at them again? I would think, “I’ll remember what I NEED to..the points that really mattered to me”. But the truth is ‘out of site-out of mind’. I honestly use only what I DO remember, which is at the most 10%.
Now you won’t ever use 100%, probably not even 50%. But taking the time to review the knowledge you do have, whether written or in your head, can lead to amazing changes in your life. And YOU taking the action is the “game changer”.
Recently a client told me she was taking advantage of every opportunity that came her way. I was very pleased with this statement because most of the time we do not even look at the doors placed before us. We are too busy watching for the door WE THINK should be there, not the ones we have actually asked for. So that was a huge stride in the right direction. But I want to propose another option…YOU CREATE the DOOR!
Understanding the knowledge we currently hold along with our Vision and Desire will CREATE an opportunity. Completely ours..create, birth, grow, nurture and own the result. No longer sitting back waiting for others to create…we control the blessed event.
So set aside some “thinking time” to explore what you already know. Allow yourself to be the creator of the opportunity. Not only is it the most rewarding event you will have experienced in a long time, it is the most successful.
Have you ever seen insanity where you later saw creativity? Thought maybe it was crazy but then realized it was total sanity? Didn’t make sense..but then it did? From “Uh, what is that?” to “Wow! That is amazing!”?
John Mueck is one of my favorite artists. He does the most amazing work! sculptures that so reflect real life that you sometimes cannot tell the difference, except for the fact most of them are more than life size! The exquisite detail of expression..real hair..skin that just asks for a touch…
Vision is about taking what you have not seen done and making it work. Creating productivity whether personal or business. Mueck doesn’t “rubber stamp” his work. He took ordinary human sculpture and made it amazing, Insanity to Creativity! He took the components of other mediums and placed them into his vision. You can do the same. Where do you want to end up? It doesn’t have to be a ‘finished’ product but rather a result. Take what you already have knowledge of, can you use those elements to obtain your result? Are you willing to take the risk? Try? Move forward? Not backward or maybe even worse..stand still?
Challenge yourself today. Make one move..just one..toward your vision!
